Why Should I take H1 or H2 Economics

Selecting the preferred subject

In view of the above areas of study for H1 and H2 Economics, it will be crucial to consider the learning objectives of these subjects to determine whether you should take H1 or H2 Economics.

Since you are reading this article, we can safely assume that you intend to or have already enrolled in your ideal JC. If you have heard that the Economics subject is commonly picked by both arts stream and science stream students, then you are not mistaken. In fact, many students in JC pick Economics to study due to its novelty and popularity. However, these same students often remain confused over the H1 and H2 syllabus differences, which is very common. So, let me share with you the key differences between H1 and H2 Economics so that you can make a rational decision on your part.

1. Capacity to write long essays

Perhaps the biggest deciding factor between H1 and H2 is your capacity to write long essays. For those who can easily pick up a pen and write in prose, H2 Economics is definitely for you as the syllabus requires you to attempt multiple essay questions in order to test your knowledge of Economics concepts. Those who found that they have struggled with essays during the ‘O’ Level period, may find it comforting that H1 Economics does not contain any long essay questions. Simply said, the H1 syllabus does not require you to write chunks of paragraphs for the next 2 years.

2. Nature of question

The H1 and H2 syllabus differ in the nature of its questions. While both syllabi share similarities in the learnt economic principles and concepts, the questions tested in examinations are rather nuanced in that the H1 syllabus focus on conceptual understanding and causation. There is considerable emphasis on Case Study Questions (CSQs) that relates to your ability to analyse trends and data in a given source. These questions are relatively surface-level but demands rigour in content nonetheless.

On the other hand, the H2 syllabus prods students to explore the intricacies and integration of economic concepts through open-ended questions. These essay questions are often seen to be rigorous in the scope of arguments and necessitates you to approach the examined topic with different techniques such as time- and space- comparison, feasibility and consideration for external factors.

3. Skills needed for Essays and CSQ

With the essay component missing in the H1 syllabus, it is only natural that the skills you acquire in the next 2 years will also differ depending on which syllabus you choose to enrol in. If you choose the H2 Economics route, you will find yourself acquiring more content-writing skills as there is a heavy emphasis on the essay-writing component. These students will develop the techniques to develop causations between economic concepts and examine the broad scope of economic factors that interconnect with one another. In contrast, if you are keen on the H1 Economics route, you will pick up more application-based skills that teach you how to pick out datas and figures and dissect key ideas from economic reports and news. These skills are exceptionally handy when you are trying to decipher news sources and reports in the future.
